The heart of Switzerland is formed by the Alps. In the north, they are composed of limestone, marl and dolomite, in the centre the crystalline massifs consist mainly of granite and gneiss, and schist and rock deposits form the mountains of the south. Thus each region has its typical characteristic landscape which can be traced back to a bygone period of the earth's history, in particular to the Ice Ages.

Industry has gained a foothold in the larger valleys, with water power often the determining factor. Alpine tourism, which developed in the middle of the last century, has enjoyed an enormous upswing since the beginning of this century owing to the accessibility provided by mountain railways and, particularly since the Second World War, the increasing popularity of winter sports.

Four languages are spoken in Switzerland; German, French, Italian and Rhaeto-Romansh. Each have their literature and there are just as many traditions, mentalities and cultures.
